Mullingar U16s Battle Hard in Tough Clash Against Portlaoise

Mullingar Rugby Football Club’s U16 team faced a challenging away game against Portlaoise on Sunday afternoon. The 2:30 PM kickoff saw the home side start strongly, immediately putting Mullingar under pressure and forcing an early scrum. Mullingar responded with a promising break through the Portlaoise pack, gaining 30 yards before the defense brought them down.

Despite some solid ruck work from Mullingar, a handling error allowed Portlaoise to counterattack, keeping the pressure on. Mullingar's defense held firm for much of the first half, but Portlaoise eventually broke through, scoring their first try from a well-executed lineout. Mullingar defended valiantly, but two more tries from Portlaoise saw them lead 17-0 by halftime.

In the second half, Mullingar played with improved discipline and structure, even when down to 14 men after a yellow card for a high tackle. Their kicking game helped relieve some pressure, but Portlaoise continued to control possession and territory. Despite a much more competitive second half, neither team was able to add to the scoreline.

While Portlaoise emerged as the stronger side, Mullingar showed moments of potential and a determined defensive effort that promises better performances ahead.
