Mullingar U16 Girls Edge Out Athy in a Close Encounter

The Mullingar RFC U16 girls’ team traveled to Athy on Saturday for what turned out to be a nail-biting match, ultimately securing a 43-39 win. From the first whistle, the team knew they were in for a challenge, with Athy quickly scoring in the opening minutes. Mia answered back for Mullingar, evening the score at 5-5. Jess, known for her impressive runs, soon put Mullingar in the lead after a fantastic length-of-the-field try.

The match was intense, with both teams trading scores. Emma, Clodagh, and captain Caoimhe all contributed to keep the sides level multiple times throughout the game. Jess continued her stellar performance, scoring three more tries, including a breathtaking final run dodging five tackles, sealing her position as Player of the Match.

In the final minutes, Athy made a late surge with a penalty and a try, but Mullingar held their ground to end the game 43-39. Despite the win, the girls know there’s room to improve, and they’re ready to regroup ahead of next week’s home game against Gorey. Mullingar supporters turned out in force to cheer the team on, and with a strong 40-player panel, the U16 girls have shown they’re ready to compete with the best in Leinster.
